It's still May, but already we're experiencing vegetation fires here in Sonoma County. One fire, called the Grove Fire, has prompted evacuations in the El Verano area. Another fire caused a closure of Mark West Springs Road from Riebli Road to Ursuline Road, and a third was contained along Route 12.
With temperatures in the 80's and gusty winds, tall stands of untended, dry grass line the roadsides and parks and pose a real threat. It takes only a spark to set that grass aflame. It's hard to understand how, after four years of heartache and terrible damages from wildfires, property owners and local governments shirk their obligation to maintain their land. If we're seeing fires that can prompt evacuations this early, what can we expect as we head into the hot summer months?
